Reliquary Art Boxes
My first reliquary art box, “Covering Up a Chaotic Inner Life” grew from a not entirely tongue-in-cheek desire to reconcile my meditative practice (beading) with the distractions I felt all around me.
That single journal-like prompt took on a life and series of its own. Working within the limits of a simple 9" x 7" x 6" wooden box, each new project is a self-contained little world of signs and remembrances—of a moment, a challenge, a friendship, a life…
Reliquary – a container or shrine in which sacred relics are kept.
100 Mirrors Series
When I built the first mirror in this series—the green one—“Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall…” in 1999, it felt like an exploration into a more personal realm. I used colored pencil on paper with leather, wire, glass and ceramic beads. On the back is a poem I wrote at the time, about the ongoing process of aging.
I later realized it was not the first time I had used mirrors; in fact pieces such as “Reflection Study” with mirror shards and “Seeking Serenity” were done 10 and 20 years prior. It was intriguing to find a connecting thread in my own work of which I had been unaware.
I’m still working on the mirrors… though if you count projects I’ve done with students, I’m well over 100.
